Role Description
The Organ Placement Specialist (OPS) is responsible for coordinating all aspects of organ transplantation including:
• Contacting recipients for wellness checks.
• Organ implantation at the transplant center facility during business and non-business hours including weekends and holidays.
• Acting as a liaison between transplant center partners and various organizations including OPOs, HLA staff, operating room staff, and medical transportation companies.
Responsibilities include:
• Screening organ offers against transplant center specific criteria.
• Responding to incoming local/import organ offers from Organ Procurement Organizations through United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS).
• Receiving both initial and update calls, collecting data regarding organ offers to determine suitability for transplant.
• Communicating with transplant surgeons, physicians, or transplant coordinators regarding organ offers and recipient information.
• Placing outbound calls to conduct medical interviews (wellness checks) with wait-listed transplant patients.
• Documenting wellness checks in the patient EMR and proprietary software.
• Triage transplant center patient calls and route them to the appropriate party.
• Attending OPS meetings and transplant center specific meetings/trainings as requested.
• Interacting with OPOs, transplant coordinators, transplant surgeons, physicians, anesthesia, HLA staff, etc., to facilitate organ recovery and recipient surgical cases.
• Responding to incoming calls from OPO staff, surgeons, transplant coordinators, and other parties.
• Listening and responding to organ offers through the guidance and criteria set by the transplant center partner.
• Completing referral messages and organ import offer processes accurately.
• Obtaining necessary medical information regarding organ offers from automated UNOS notifications.
• Documenting and recording information clearly and concisely.
• Placing appropriate outbound calls to involved agencies per client protocol.
• Relaying all known information to appropriate persons/agencies on case status.
• Documenting organ import offers and contacting necessary personnel in a timely manner.
• Evaluating all organ offers per client protocol for transplant.
• Conducting required outbound communication related to active organ placement cases until a decision to accept or decline the offer is reached.
• Demonstrating proficiency related to process or quality investigations and communicating findings to supervisor/manager.
• Maintaining and advancing technical skills through professional education and training.
• Performing training and mentoring for other Organ Placement Specialists.
• Coordinating organ offers in accordance with Statline SOPs and compliance with all company policies and standards.
• Assisting on special projects and performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• High School Diploma/G.E.D.
• 3 Years Medical background or training (EMT, Paramedics - 3 or more years of experience, LPN, RN, EMS dispatcher).
• Medical background or training required.
• 2+ years in the field of organ donation preferred.
• CTP, CCTC and/or CPTC certifications preferred.
• Completion of course work related to Human Anatomy and Physiology preferred.
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and/or in a team environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency with technical and business writing skills.
• Ability to work in a flexible environment.
• Strong customer service, conflict resolution, and communication skills required.
• Ability to type a minimum of 30 wpm required.
• Effectively multi-task and problem solve issues.
• Adapt to change quickly while meeting organizational goals required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong sense of independence and ability to learn in a remote/virtual environment.
