Position Summary
This role partners with middle school students and families to support academic progress, social-emotional development, and overall well-being during key developmental years. The Middle School Counselor provides personalized guidance, school-based counseling support, and helps students build the skills, confidence, and direction needed for long-term success in high school and beyond.
Essential Duties (Top 5 Roles)
1) Academic Pathway & Transition Coordinator
- Ensure each middle school student participates in annual academic planning conversations.
- Partner with students and families to create personalized academic pathways aligned with strengths, interests, and long-term goals.
- Support successful transitions into and through middle school, including preparation for high school expectations.
2) Academic, Career & Developmental Advisor
- Provide guidance on study skills, executive functioning, and academic habits critical for long-term success.
- Introduce early career exploration through age-appropriate opportunities and exposure.
- Utilize student achievement data to monitor progress and guide interventions.
- Collaborate with mentors and WL team members to support each student’s growth.
- Support state testing processes (e.g., CMAS) as applicable.
3) Course Planning & Schedule Support
- Review and approve student course selections aligned with middle school standards and readiness.
- Guide families through course progression and academic expectations.
- Support schedule adjustments in alignment with school policies.
- Ensure students are appropriately prepared for high school academic pathways.
4) Counseling & Responsive Services
- Provide school-based counseling support focused on student well-being, academic success, and social-emotional development.
- Respond promptly to student and family concerns with thoughtful, solutions-oriented guidance.
- Assess student needs and provide tiered supports within a school-based framework, including referrals when appropriate.
- Support students in areas such as peer relationships, emotional regulation, and school engagement.
- Facilitate small group sessions or interventions as needed.
5) Community Building & Family Engagement
- Contribute to a connected and engaging middle school community experience.
- Attend and support school events, meetings, and family engagement opportunities.
- Build strong relationships with students and families to foster a sense of belonging and trust.
- Share feedback and insights with the WAC Executive Director to strengthen programming.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field (required)
- Current Colorado Special Services License (School Counselor) or ability to obtain (required)
- Experience working with middle school students (grades 6–8)
- Demonstrated ability to support student mental health, social-emotional development, and academic planning
- Experience providing school-based counseling support, including social-emotional development and referral coordination
- Strong understanding of adolescent development, including executive functioning and behavioral needs
- Ability to assess student needs and provide tiered supports (MTSS/SEL frameworks preferred)
- Experience partnering with families on academic and social-emotional concerns
- Ability to build meaningful relationships in a virtual environment
- Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism, discretion, and care

Salary Range
- $65,000 - $80,000 annual salary
